마이크로소프트가 미국 타임워너의 인터넷 사업부문인 AOL 인수 협상에 나섰다고 AP 등 미 외신들이 17일(현지시각), 일제히 보도했다.
AOL 인수에는 이미 야후도 참가하고 있어, 양사간 인수전이 본격화될 것이란 전망이다.
MS의 이번 AOL 인수 협상은 야후 인수 불발에 따른 대안 모색이란 분석이다. 미국 인터넷 검색시장 점유율 약 10%를 차지하는 MS는 5%인 AOL을 인수, 점유율 60%에 가까운 절대 1위 구글을 추격할 계획이라는 것.
MS의 2위 검색업체인 야후 인수 시도는 야후 경영진의 반대에 부딪혀 연거푸 무산되고 있다.
한편, 타임워너 입장에선 손해볼 게 없다는 지적이다. MS와 야후 경쟁을 부추겨 보다 유리한 조건을 이끌어낼 수 있으리란 속내라는 것.
